On October 27 Dr. Stark presented the second in his series of talks on the complications of cancer therapy. His talk was entitled: Complications of Cancer Therapy II: Metabolic Bone Disease and Its Treatment. Click here for the talk. He reviewed the major issues involving the use of Bisphosphonates (e.g., fosamax, boniva) in osteoporosis and the more potent BP’s (Aredia and Zometa) in the prevention of pathologic fractures in the adjunctive treatment of cancer — especially with reference to Vitamin D metabolism and the risk of developing osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) a recently recognized and very morbid complication.
